Who Can Read More Better?
Today I thought it would be a good idea to exercise our reading brains; stop thinking about grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, and all of that jazz. Let’s just see how well we can all read Thai, tones included.
We’re going for accuracy and speed, but that doesn’t mean you should just try and read as fast as you can. See how quickly you can read without messing up. I also suggest you record yourself so you can listen back and see where your hiccups occurred. This will allow you to find patterns; perhaps you always get caught up on reading middle class consonants with tone marks, or you can never remember how a certain vowel is supposed to sound, etc.
It would be helpful to all of us if you posted how well you did.

ศาสนาพุทธ หรือพระพุทธศาสนา เป็นศาสนาและปรัชญาแวดล้อมประเพณี ความเชื่อและการปฏิบัติหลากหลาย โดยมีพระพุทธเจ้าเป็นศาสดา, พระธรรมที่พระพุทธองค์ตรัสสอนไว้เป็นหลักคำสอนสำคัญ และ พระสงฆ์ เป็นชุมชนผู้นับถือศาสนาและศึกษาปฏิบัติตนตามคำสั่งสอนของพระศาสดา ตลอดจนสืบทอดพระธรรมแห่งศาสนาพุทธ รวมเรียกว่า ไตรรัตน์ (พระรัตนตรัย) “สรณคมน์ในไตรรัตน์” เดิมเคยเป็นการแสดงและข้อผูกมัดแห่งวิถีพุทธ และเป็นความแตกต่างทั่วไประหว่างชาวพุทธกับศาสนิกชนอื่น
ศาสนาพุทธเป็นศาสนาอเทวนิยม และเชื่อในศักยภาพของมนุษย์ว่าทุกคนสามารถพัฒนาจิตใจไปสู่ความเป็นมนุษย์ที่สมบูรณ์ได้ด้วยความเพียรของตน กล่าวคือ ศาสนาพุทธสอนให้มนุษย์บันดาลชีวิตของตนเองด้วยผลแห่งการกระทำของตน ตาม กฎแห่งกรรม มิได้มาจากการอ้อนวอนขอจากพระเป็นเจ้าและสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์นอกกาย คือ ให้พึ่งตนเอง เพื่อพาตัวเองออกจากกอง ทุกข์ มีจุดมุ่งหมายคือการสอนให้มนุษย์หลุดพ้นจากความทุกข์ทั้งปวงในโลกด้วยวิธีการสร้าง ปัญญา ในการอยู่กับความทุกข์อย่างรู้เท่าทันตามความเป็นจริง วัตถุประสงค์สูงสุดของศาสนา คือ การหลุดพ้นจากความทุกข์ทั้งปวงและวัฏจักรการเวียนว่ายตายเกิด เช่นเดียวกับที่พระศาสดาทรงหลุดพ้นได้ด้วยกำลังสติปัญญาและความเพียรของพระองค์เอง ในฐานะที่พระองค์ก็ทรงเป็นมนุษย์ มิใช่เทพเจ้าหรือทูตของพระเจ้าองค์ใด
พระศาสดาของศาสนาพุทธคือพระโคตมพุทธเจ้า พระนามเดิมว่า เจ้าชายสิทธัตถะ ได้ทรงเริ่มออกเผยแผ่คำสอนในชมพูทวีป ตั้งแต่สมัยพุทธกาล แต่หลังปรินิพพานของพระพุทธเจ้า พระธรรมวินัยที่พระองค์ทรงสั่งสอน ได้ถูกรวบรวมเป็นหมวดหมู่ด้วยการสังคายนาพระธรรมวินัยครั้งแรก จนมีการรวบรวมขึ้นเป็นพระไตรปิฎก ซึ่งเป็นหลักการสำคัญที่ไม่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงมาตลอดของ นิกายเถรวาท ที่ยึดหลักไม่ยอมเปลี่ยนแปลงคำสั่งสอนของพระพุทธเจ้า แต่ในการสังคายนาพระธรรมวินัยครั้งที่สอง ได้เกิดแนวคิดที่เห็นต่างออกไป ว่าธรรมวินัยสามารถปรับปรุงเปลี่ยนแปลงได้ตามเวลาและสถานการณ์เพื่อความอยู่รอดแห่งศาสนาพุทธ แนวคิดดังกล่าวจึงได้เริ่มก่อตัวและแตกสายออกเป็นนิกายใหม่ในชื่อของ นิกายมหายาน ทั้งสองนิกายได้แตกนิกายย่อยไปอีกและเผยแพร่ออกไปทั่วดินแดนเอเชียและใกล้เคียง บ้างก็จัดว่า วัชรยาน เป็นอีกนิกายหนึ่ง แต่บ้างว่าเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของนิกายมหายาน แต่การจัดมากกว่านั้นก็มี หลักพื้นฐานสำคัญของปฏิจสมุปบาท เป็นเพียงหลักเดียวที่เป็นคำสอนร่วมกันของคติพุทธ
ปัจจุบันศาสนาพุทธได้เผยแผ่ไปทั่วโลก โดยมีจำนวนผู้นับถือส่วนใหญ่อยู่ในทวีปเอเชีย ทั้งในเอเชียกลาง เอเชียตะวันออก และเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ปัจจุบันศาสนาพุทธได้มีผู้นับถือกระจายไปทั่วโลก หากนับจำนวนรวมกันแล้วประมาณ 700 ล้านคน ด้วยมีผู้นับถือในหลายประเทศ ศาสนาพุทธจึงเป็นศาสนาสากล

I think I really need more pratice to translate this…I need a lot of time and patience to learn how to read and write this…
Don’t worry about translating, just read. It’s a reading exercise.
Good stuff. This is just a little past my current level, which means it’s a good, meaty piece for me to read. I can make out the gist of it. My level is of somebody who is currently working his way through “Thai for Advanced Readers”.
And btw, your site is a wonderful resource and I greatly appreciate you putting up the Manee series.
Thanks, DJP! Every once in a while I just read to make sure I have the vowels and tones correct. In this case I didn’t even care about translating.
Thanks for the interesting challenge, but I think it’s very difficult to read Thai accurately without previously knowing a large fraction of words in the text. For example, the first word can be pronounced at least 4 different ways depending how you break the word into syllables. For folks who take up the challenge, it would be helpful to have an .mp3 recording of the text read by a native Thai speaker to check their work against.

If I follow you correctly, your point is more that a better understanding of the words themselves (rather than there actually being different pronunciations) is in order. To that end, I agree. That being said, (a) it’s good to practice no matter what – whether you know the word or you don’t; (b) it’s a great way to learn new vocabulary by looking up the words; (c) depending on what you read you can improve your language ability by understanding sentence structure and grammar. Word knowledge aside I see it as a very useful exercise, even without an MP3 to check against.
